Veneer replacement: preserve more in a second intervention.

Veneers should not be replaced simply because time has passed. The first step is to understand why change is being considered, what natural tooth remains, how the previous treatment was prepared and which option can address the problem with the least reasonable intervention.

01

First decide whether replacement is actually needed

Age alone is not a reason to replace a veneer. Integrity, margins, gum condition, function and the specific reason for change are assessed first.

A second intervention should begin with a defined clinical or aesthetic indication rather than removing restorations simply to start again.

02

The next plan begins with the tooth underneath

A previous veneer may have been placed without preparation, with minimal preparation or on a tooth that had already been restored. Each starting point offers different future options.

The SAIZ Preservation Standard guides the decision towards retaining healthy structure and avoiding intervention on teeth or restorations that do not need to be changed.

03

Replacement can be a redesign, not a repetition

A new plan may change proportion, volume, texture, brightness or the way ceramic integrates with lips, gums and natural teeth.

The objective is defined before new ceramic is made and adapted to the actual condition of each tooth.

04

The more treatment history a tooth has, the more preservation matters

Every irreversible intervention affects future options. Veneer revision therefore starts by identifying what can remain and what genuinely needs to change.

If an existing restoration can be retained, repaired or managed with a more limited intervention, that possibility belongs in the assessment.

REASONS FOR ASSESSMENT

Why are you considering
changing your veneers?

The assessment starts with the real reason for change. Not every situation requires replacing every restoration.

01 / FRACTURE OR DETERIORATION

Something has changed clinically

Fracture, wear, loss of adaptation or a local problem may justify treating one or several restorations.

02 / SHAPE, SHADE OR VOLUME

The smile no longer feels natural

Shape, proportion, brightness, opacity or an artificial appearance can be reviewed without assuming the entire treatment must be redone.

03 / GUMS AND INTEGRATION

The surrounding tissues matter too

Changes in gums, margins, cleaning access or integration with natural teeth can alter the indication and scope of a second intervention.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is worth knowing before you decide.

How is the choice made between retaining, repairing and replacing a veneer?

The veneer, tooth, gums, bite and reason for the consultation are assessed. A restoration that remains suitable may be retained. A limited problem may allow repair. Replacement is considered for a specific indication; age alone does not decide it or require replacing every veneer.

Can SAIZ replace veneers fitted at another clinic?

Yes. Existing veneers from another clinic can be assessed. The plan is based on the present condition of the teeth and restorations, not on who carried out the previous treatment.

Do old veneers automatically need replacement?

No. There is no universal replacement date. Intervention should respond to a clinical, functional or aesthetic reason.

Can just one veneer be replaced?

Potentially. Shade, material, form, position and neighbouring restorations need to be assessed to determine whether one replacement can integrate appropriately.

Replacing dental veneers: retain, repair or replace?

Replacing dental veneers does not necessarily mean remaking the whole smile. We assess your concern, each restoration, gums, bite and remaining tooth structure. Monitoring, an adjustment, repair or replacement of individual restorations may be appropriate. Tooth protection is discussed before removal.

First decide what is worth preserving.

We assess the existing restorations, remaining tooth structure and reason for change before deciding whether to retain, repair or replace.
