Tooth preparation for veneers: what it means.

Preparing a tooth means removing some structure for a specific reason: creating space, correcting contour or integrating shape and colour. This decision is irreversible and should be justified before treatment begins.

DIRECT ANSWERS

The essentials, before you decide.

01

Must teeth always be reduced for veneers?

No. Ceramic can be added without reducing teeth in suitable cases. Limited preparation may be needed in others to avoid excess contour and improve integration.

02

How much tooth is removed for a veneer?

There is no single appropriate amount for everyone. Preparation should be limited to what the design and clinical situation require, preserving enamel where possible.

03

Is tooth reduction reversible?

No. Removed tooth structure does not grow back. Indication and planning must come before preparation.

01

Preparation should never be automatic.

Space may be needed to manage volume, alter contour, mask colour or integrate a restoration. Routine preparation when an additive solution is suitable removes structure without clinical benefit.

02

Preserving enamel matters biologically and for bonding.

Enamel is a favourable substrate for adhesion. Retaining it when compatible with the design preserves options and limits irreversible intervention.

03

An ultra-thin veneer may be additive, but the name alone does not guarantee it.

Small, retruded or worn teeth may leave room for ceramic. A prominent tooth or one with excess volume may look artificial if zero preparation is forced.

04

The extent of preparation belongs in the plan.

Photographs, scanning and analysis of shape, colour and bite help determine whether no-prep or limited correction is appropriate. Preparation should not be improvised on placement day.

FINDING THE RIGHT TREATMENT

Is this what
your smile needs?

The starting point is what you would like to change. The clinical assessment confirms which option makes sense.

01 / SHAPE & PROPORTION

Assess veneers

For changes in shape, proportion or selected colour concerns when teeth, gums and bite allow treatment.

When no-prep may be possible
02 / TOOTH POSITION

Study alignment first

If tooth position is the main issue, orthodontics may make more sense before adding ceramic.

03 / HEALTH & MAINTENANCE

Care for the foundation

Gums, decay and overload should be assessed before starting. Reviews and hygiene remain part of long-term care.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is worth knowing before you decide.

Do ultra-thin veneers always avoid tooth reduction?

They can in selected cases, but the label does not guarantee zero preparation. Indication depends on the tooth and the intended change.

Can a very dark tooth have a no-prep veneer?

It depends on the colour change required and the space available. Limited preparation may sometimes integrate colour better without excess bulk.

Is it always better never to prepare teeth?

No. The aim is to avoid unnecessary reduction. A small correction may be more conservative than an overcontoured restoration.
